The station a recipe belongs to is decided by the item it produces, not by the recipe itself. Food and drink are cooked in a kitchen, anything tagged for blacksmithing goes to the forge, furniture to the woodcrafting bench, milled goods to the mill, and everything else is refined at the stone refinery.
Cooking recipes also carry a kitchen tier. A tier 2 recipe is unusable until the kitchen is upgraded, however high your cooking skill is.
Each recipe shows what its ingredients are worth in the shipping bin against what the finished dish is worth, so you can see at a glance whether cooking adds value or destroys it. Star rank drives this: a dish sells for its ingredients times 1.1 at one star, rising to 1.3 at five, before being rounded down to a clean number.
Dishes are also the best gifts in the game, since two perks multiply the heart points from cooked food specifically. A dish that loses gold can still be the right thing to make — check the gift finder before you judge a recipe on price alone.
Recipes take in-game time, which is the real cost early on. Several perks shave ten minutes off each station's recipes, and milling is a special case: its timer is skipped entirely unless you are standing in the Mill.
