Essence: earning it, spending it, and the Dragon Forge
Essence is earned in fractions from ordinary work and spent almost entirely on perks. The two items people search for by name are not the currency at all.
The short answer
Essence accumulates from swinging tools, catching fish, killing monsters and petting animals — ten points make one essence — and it is spent almost entirely on skill perks at the shrines. Hardened Essence is not the currency: it is a rare artifact dug up in the deepest mine biome. A "medium essence gem" is the Medium Essence Stone, crafted at the refinery.
Where essence comes from
Essence is one pool, shared across every skill, and it accrues in tenths. Ordinary work drops points; ten points make one essence, and the game rolls them up into visible motes as you go.
| What you do | Points |
|---|---|
| Till a tile | 1 |
| Chop a tree or stump | 1 |
| Break a rock, dig, or water a tile | your tool’s tier, plus 1 |
| Fell a whole tree | 5 |
| Pet a farm animal | 3 |
| Catch a small / medium / large / giant fish | 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 |
| Catch a legendary or special-weather fish | doubled |
| Kill a monster | 5 to 25, by species |
Two things are worth noticing. Nothing on that list is a special activity — a normal day of farming and mining generates essence by itself, which is why players who never think about it still end up with hundreds. And harvesting crops, foraging, cooking and completing quests give none at all, so a play style built only around those will feel permanently short.
Essence also does not accumulate at all until an early story cutscene about the unusual tree on your farm. Before that the counter is not even shown.
What it is actually for
Almost all of it goes on perks, bought at the shrines. Each perk is a flat one-off cost between 10 and 210 essence, and the tiers of each skill tree unlock at skill level 1, 15, 30, 45 and 60.
Buying every perk in the game — all 167 across the ten trees — costs 15,265 essence. That is a whole-playthrough figure, not a target for year one.
The important part: there is no respec, refund or reset anywhere in the game. A perk you buy is bought forever, so the order you take them in is a real decision. Every tree, every perk and its exact cost is on the skills and perks page.
A little essence also goes on convenience. The shrines and the two house statues teleport you for 10 essence a trip, a misty spot on the map trades 10 for a random rare item, and summoning the Mistmare from its statue costs 100.
Essence Stones, and why they exist
Essence Stones are essence in solid form. All five are made at the refinery — stone plus essence, twenty minutes each — and each one charges a magic machine for a fixed number of days.
| Stone | Recipe | Charges | Cracks back into |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny Essence Stone | 5 Stone + 5 essence | 1 day | 5 essence |
| Small Essence Stone | 10 Stone + 25 essence | 5 days | 25 essence |
| Medium Essence Stone | 20 Stone + 50 essence | 10 days | 50 essence |
| Large Essence Stone | 40 Stone + 100 essence | 20 days | 100 essence |
| Giant Essence Stone | 80 Stone + 200 essence | 40 days | 200 essence |
Cracking one open returns exactly what it cost, so a stone is a storage container rather than a trade — you never gain or lose essence by making one. They also turn up on their own from mine treasure chests, at a flat 15% per chest with the grade of stone matching the grade of chest, and as rewards at the higher town ranks.
Only two devices burn them, and both spend one charge per day they actually do something:
- Water Sprite Statue waters a 5×5 block of soil each morning, and the large version covers 7×7. Outdoors it idles for free on a rainy or snowy day, since the weather has already done the job. The full watering rules are in watering, seasons and sprinklers.
- Animal Sprite Statue pets every animal in its building for you.
One catch: you cannot top a statue up. It only accepts a new stone once the current one has run out completely, so putting a Giant stone into something you will move next week wastes the difference.
Two names that are not what they sound like
Hardened Essence is not essence. It is an archaeology artifact — a rare find from the dig sites in the Ancient Ruins, the deepest mine biome, from floor 80 down. Using it gives you nothing; its value is 30 renown when donated, a museum slot in the dragon set, and the fact that both Juniper and Seridia love it as a gift. If you are hunting one, the answer is simply to dig in the Ruins, and the gift finder will confirm who to give it to.
There is no “essence gem” in the game. People searching for a “medium essence gem” want Medium Essence Stone, in the table above.
The Dragon Forge, and how to light it
The Dragon Forge is a crafting station in the Priestess’ Quarters, deep in the Ruins section of the mines. Finding it is not the puzzle; getting it burning is.
You need the Dragon's Breath spell first, which comes from breaking the fire seal. Then, during the quest that sends you looking for the magic key, explore the north-west room, and then cast Dragon's Breath directly at the forge in the south-west room. That is the whole of “lighting” it — no fuel, no item, just the spell. Before that quest stage the forge refuses to respond at all, which is why casting at it too early makes it look broken.
Once lit, it makes five things: Dragon-Forged Sword, the strongest weapon in the game, and four materials — a fang, a horn, a core and a powder. Those four are exactly what the Final Seal demands, one of each, so the Dragon Forge is not optional for finishing the story.
Budget for it. Each of the four materials consumes one Medium Essence Stone on top of its other ingredients, so the Final Seal costs 200 essence in stones alone, plus 80 stone to make them.
